Commonly Cited Sources in IEEE Style

IEEE Basics

In-Text Citation Information - IEEE style references use brackets [ ] for in-text references. The number within the brackets corresponds to the order in which the source appears in the text. For example, the first source cited in a work would have a [1] used for an in-text citation. For more information on in-text citations please refer to our In-Text Citation Examples section.

Bibliographies / Works Cited / Reference Lists - Sources should be listed numerically in order of use, not alphabetically. The first source cited in a work would be the first source cited in a Reference List. IEEE style citations often call for abbreviated titles for publications, for a full list of IEEE approved abbreviations please refer to our Abbreviations for IEEE Publications section.

Sample Article. Note In-Text Citations and the Reference List which is at the end of the article.

In-Text citation examples

In-Text References:

In-text citations appear on the line, in square brackets, inside the punctuation.

Grammatically, they may be treated as if they were footnote numbers, e.g., as shown by Brown [4], [5]; as mentioned earlier [2], [4]–[7], [9]; Smith [4] and Brown and Jones [5]; Wood et al.[7].

Note: Use et al. when six or more names are given, or as nouns: as demonstrated in [3]; according to [4] and [6]–[9].

Repeating References:

If citing a source multiple times repeat the earlier reference number. If the reference gives a new page number, or other information, use the following forms :[3, Th. 1]; [3, Lemma 2]; [3, pp. 5-10]; [3, eq. (2)]; [3, Fig. 1]; [3, Appendix I]; [3, Sec. 4.5]; [3, Ch. 2, pp. 5-10]; [3, Algorithm 5].
