Just like LCSH* (Library of Congress Subject Headings), the LCC* (Library of Congress Classification) system is an old hierarchical language containing many terms that are no longer accurate, or that express biased or outdated perspectives.
The goal of this call number project is to identify the LC call numbers in our collection that still refer to biased or outdated language. We began with any call numbers that referred to the terms ‘Negro’ and ‘Oriental.’ The books were given new call numbers, and spine labels, that refer to the updated terms of ‘Black,’ ‘African American,’ ‘Asian,’ or ‘Asian American,' according to the geographical context. This first update was completed in November 2022, and over 400 books were given updated call numbers. Additional call numbers will be updated as necessary.
