Welcome to the guide to Kanopy, a streaming video service that provides instant access to thousands of films in a wide variety of disciplines from some of the industry's leading producers and distributors, including Criterion Collection, Kino Lorber, Media Education Foundation (MEF), First Run Features, PBS, and BBC Active.
Subject areas covered include the Arts, Business, Education, Global Studies & Languages, Health, History, Languages & Literature, Media & Communications, Sciences, Social Sciences, and Instructional Films & Lessons.
It's extremely easy to browse and search Kanopy. Click the database link beneath the picture below to begin. You can Browse Subjects or search by title or keyword.
Kanopy now offers an automatic citation generator accessible on the page of the film you wish to cite. Follow the steps below to get a pre-generated citation:
Step 1: Hover over or click on the "...More" button right below the title of the film (right below the film itself).
Step 2: Click on "Cite this Product".
Step 3: A box will appear below the "...More" button with a section called "Cite this Product". Click on the "Cite" button.
Step 4: A new box will appear with a generated citation. To change the style (ex: MLA, APA), click on the field in the upper right corner of this new box and search for the style you need.
Remember, it's always a good idea to double check automatically generated citations from databases. To see correct sample citations in various citation styles, check out how to cite video in one of our citation guides:
Step 1: In the toolbar beneath the film you wish to create a clip from, click Create Clip/Playlist
Step 2: You will need to create a log-in account so that you can save your clips (this is different from your Net ID).
Step 3: Once you have logged in, create a new playlist and name it.
Step 4: Next to the name of the playlist you created, there is a link to Add Video. Click the plus sign to add the current video to your playlist. You can search and add other videos to your playlist.
Step 5: Once you have added a film or films to your playlist, you can then go into your playlist and click on the film you added to create shorter clips of it. You will need to note the start and stop time of the clip you wish to create and then add them into the fields (pictured below). When you are done, hit Save Clip.
Step 1: Locate the film in Kanopy that you wish to embed.
Step 2: Below the video you will see a toolbar. Click on Share/Embed, and then click the Embed tab. Copy the code.
Step 3: Within Blackboard, create an "item". Give the item a title, but do not paste the code in the content box below. Instead, click the tiny HTML icon, which will launch a separate text box. Paste the embed code here. Hit Submit several times until you are back in the content area. Refresh the webpage and you should see the video right there in Blackboard.
