Finding Patents

Patent Basics

  • A patent provides ownership rights to specific inventions.
  • Once a patent is granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office others are excluded from "making, using, offering for sale, selling or importing the invention"¹.
  • In exchange for preventing others from reproducing inventions, patents display detailed product information.
  • United States patents usually last 20 years and are only valid in the United States and its territories.
