Use databases to find articles on your topic. These databases are the best place to start.

  • Humanities Full Text
    With abstracts and some full-text, this database encompasses all fields of the humanities, including art, classical studies, dance, film, journalism, philosophy, and religion. Content is primarily scholarly and includes feature articles, interviews, obituaries, reviews, and original works of fiction, drama, and poetry.
  • History in Context - World  Icon  Icon  Icon  Icon
    A collection of full-text periodicals, reference works, primary documents, and scholarly analysis that covers over 5,000 years of world history from antiquity to the present. Contains historical maps, atlases, and other images; video and audio selections from archival newsreels to NPR; and opposing viewpoint essays.
  • JSTOR
    An archive of digitized scholarly journals and books, covering many subjects in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences.
  • PAIS International & Archive
    Containing citations and abstracts for publications from many countries throughout the world, this database focuses on areas of public concern and potential legislation. Indexes journal articles, books, government documents, statistical directories, grey literature, research reports, conference papers, and web content.
  • MLA International Bibliography
    A subject index for books and articles published on literature, language and linguistics, folklore, film, literary theory & criticism, dramatic arts, as well as the historical aspects of printing and publishing. Part of the Literary Reference Center Plus database.
  • NewspaperDirect Press Display  Icon
    Newspapers from around the world in full-color, full-page format with hundreds of American and international titles in English and many other languages. Current issues are supplemented by a 60-day back file. Simultaneous user limit: 3.

  • When searching databases, use AND, OR, and parentheses to focus your search.
  • The asterisk * symbol will search for all variations of a word. For example: basket* will search for baskets and basketry. Using quotes will search for a phrase.
  • Combine synonyms with OR and put them inside parentheses, like this:
(ital*) AND ( Caravagio OR "da vinci")
