Best Movies About College Life

Founded in 1942, Fairfield University turns 72 this year – to celebrate, we’ve chosen the 72 best films about college and university life for our Summer 2014 exhibit. Animal House? History Boys? Horse Feathers? Social Network? See if your favorite college movie made our list!

Featured movies include:

1920s  — College (1927)
Buster Keaton’s lesser-known feature has some superlative comic moments, as tiny frosh Buster tries his darnedest to make every muscle-bound varsity team.Part of the DVD Collection the Art of Buster Keaton:PN2287 .K4 A783 Vols 1 – 11 Media Collection Main Level

1940’s –Good News (1947)
Here it is, “College: The Musical,” a colorful MGM remake of an earlier 1930 song-and-dance film about innocent, pie-eyed 1920s campus life. The librarian (June Allyson) falls hard for the football hero (Peter Lawford), and the predictable on-and-off romance—there’s a vamp in the way!—is surrounded by a classic score including “The Best Things in Life Are Free.” VHS, PN1995.9.M86G66, Media Collection Main Level

1960s –Where the Boys Are (1960)
This coming of age comedy film about four Midwestern college co-eds who spend spring break in Fort Lauderdale, Florida featured sun, sand, and romance. PN1997.W54 L483, Media Collection Main Level

1990’s –Rudy (1993) It’s corny, shameless American Dream stuff, but audiences love this unpretentious story of the stubborn little guy (Sean Astin) who, against the odds, wills himself onto the Notre Dame football team.PN1995.9 .S67 R843, Media Collection Main Level

2010’s– The Social Network (2010)We can’t imagine college without Facebook, so let’s go back to the social network’s birth. In this 2010 Academy Award winning film starring Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Zuckerberg’s story about how his popular site exploded into the world exposes the secrets and conflicts behind the founding of Facebook and the lawsuits that followed.
